A Breath of Fresh Air: Mint Money Management App

Welcome to money management for the new millennium.

Up until three years ago, I used to dread managing my money, balancing my checking account and optimizing my savings. I was transitioning (more, like thrusted to be honest) from my corporate life into the throes of uncertainty. Being self-employed meant that every cent and dollar suddenly became more important (not that it wasn’t before). Money management, above all else, can be imperative to the make and break of any start-up business; for me, it’s even more personal as my expenses come through multiple avenues such as camera equipment, travels, mortgage and car payments and so forth. Then Mint came into my life and changed everything. This is essentially a review that's been years in the making, and I am surprised it didn’t make its appearance on my site until now. But really though -- isn't it time we all kissed our archaic Excel spreadsheet ordeals goodbye?

Money management, above all else, can be imperative to the make and break of any start-up business

As a full-time creative freelancer and entrepreneur, who also happens to be a Millennial, I naturally gravitated towards using the Mint money management app for several reasons: convenience, ease of use (the app's user-interface is awesome) and an added level of security:

How I use the App

1. MINT AGGREGATES ALL MY BANK ACCOUNTS, BOTH CHECKING AND SAVINGS, INTO A VISUAL FEED.

With a complete breakdown of all my expenses and transactions! This is my favorite feature on the app as it allows me to have an eagle’s eye view on my income and spendings whenever, wherever. All within the reach of my fingertips.

2. MINT DEMYSTIFIES THE MYSTERIES OF BUDGETING. EXPENSES ARE ALWAYS A CONCERN FOR THE SELF-EMPLOYED.

That's why it's so important to establish a sensible budget, which is easily achieved on Mint. Whether I am eating out for a business meeting or shopping for my next luxury investment, Mint keeps me and my wallet in check. Mint also, as an added bonus, allows you to flag certain transactions/purchases as a taxable expense that can be directly exported to TurboTax. Talk about killing two of life's biggest hurdles with one app!

3. MINT -- AS OF JUST THIS PAST MONTH -- WILL MAKE SURE YOU'RE NEVER BEHIND ON YOUR BILLS.

I've always been a stickler about being on time with bills (because late fees are so no bueno). Mint forces me to be even more vigilant, as the app beautifully displays any upcoming fees and bills I have on my calendar, along with smart reminders and a 2-tap payment system. The best part? These automatic or app-prompted payments are expedited to ensure punctuality.

Ever since I started using Mint, I haven’t looked back at another spreadsheet to keep tabs on all my incoming transactions and outgoing expenses. It’s also made me feel more reassured that I won’t overspend to avoid dipping into my savings account for retirement or towards another future investment, either. As our lives become more interconnected to our digital devices, I am glad my bank account is with me every step of the way.
