5 GOLDEN TIPS FOR MAINTAINING ASIAN PLATINUM BLONDE HAIR
Between getting ready for a few trips and personal life errands, I am finally sitting down to share with you my deepest and darkest secrets.
Yes, the longly-awaited tutorial on how to maintain your platinum blonde hair. Here are 5 golden truths on the maintenance of Asian platinum blonde hair.
Sharing some insider tips on maintaining platinum blonde hair you won't get anywhere else.
1. Find a Salon That Suits Your Needs and Budget
While I’ve definitely seen some marvelous results from DIY sessions at home, I highly recommend bleaching your hair to the hands of a professional. Not only will the results be more stunning and precise but it’s also much safer and easier to correct in the event something bad happens to your hair. Your hair is an accessory worn everyday - remember that.
Finding the right salon that serves your hair needs and wallet is the tricky part. It definitely was for me.
, I found the prices to be a bit high and the location too much of a trek for me (note: However, if you do live on the Westside, be sure to check them out!).
, a hybrid salon located in Silverlake, offers the same level of experience at a more reasonable price point for me. The atmosphere there is also more mellow and intimate - just the way I like it! The staff becomes more and more like family each time I go back.
2. Expect to Test Your Patience
Beautifully bleached and dyed hair takes time, especially if it’s your first time. My initial bleaching experience took roughly 6 hours to get the desirable gradient of platinum blonde. If you have longer hair, you may even have to split it into two or three sessions. It’s important to note that the duration of time is to ensure that your hair is safely treated and bleached at the same time, but I can assure you the end result is well worth it.
3. Establish a Hair Maintenance Schedule
If you want to keep your golden mane at its shiniest, a monthly maintenance routine is crucial to avoid banding.
Banding is essentially a visible horizontal line between the old and new highlights - trust me, you do not want this to happen.
Blonde hair is extremely vulnerable to banding after more than 3-4 weeks. So plan accordingly if you want to maintain an even, smooth and natural platinum blonde color.
4. Use the Right Products
Once again, this corresponds with finding the right type of salon to achieve the most optimal results for your hair. Southpaw uses the
Aveda Coloring Method
, which is all about precision and uniqueness. My colorist,
, used an
Aveda toner formula
that’s specially mixed in with a lush but moody grey. Again, this might differ depending on the type of platinum blonde you want, which is why I recommend professional hair coloring.
At home maintenance doesn’t have to be daunting as long as you’re equipped with the right products. Make sure both your shampoo and conditioners are color safe. Brands I highly suggest looking into are
. When shampooing and washing your hair, try to use colder water. I am not sure why, but it tends to preserve the color much better. Previously, I was just using
to strengthen my hair after washing and conditioning. Now I also treat my hair with a quinoa protein mask from
. It works wonders and you only have to do it twice a week in place of your conditioner.
5. It’s Okay To Let It Grow Out - Results May Surprise You
This may contradict with the hair maintenance scheduling part a bit, but I let my hair grow out just enough to provide some contrast. Although I loved being a platinum blonde from roots to tip, the damage alone doesn’t bode well to my hair’s health in the long run. So for me, personally, a bit of black adds more dimension and character with the blonde color!
Woah, that all took a hot minute to write down, but I am glad I did. I hope these tips addresses most general questions/concerns you have for maintaining platinum blonde hair.
